READY MIX CONCRETE
Grading & Measurement
Ready-mix concrete, as the name suggests, is a concrete mixture that is prepared off-site and delivered to the construction site in a ready-to-use form. It offers various strengths, which are measured in units called megaPascals (MPa). The strength of ready-mix concrete is crucial in determining its suitability for different applications.
❖
10-20 MPa
These are the lower-strength concrete grades. They are generally used for non-structural purposes such as leveling or filling applications, where there is little to no load-bearing requirement. They are commonly used for small residential projects like driveways or pathways. They are also used for blinding, to provide a clean, level and dry working surface.
❖
25 MPa
This strength grade of ready-mix concrete is widely used for general construction purposes. It is suitable for most residential and commercial projects like building foundations, footings, and walls.
❖
30 MPa
Ready-mix concrete with a strength of 30 Mpa is considered high-strength concrete. It is commonly used for applications where additional load-bearing capacity is required, such as slabs, high-rise buildings, bridges, and heavy-duty industrial floors.
❖
35 MPa
These are very high-strength grades of ready-mix concrete, primarily used for specialized construction projects. They offer exceptional durability and are used in projects that require extreme load-bearing capacities, such as heavy industrial structures, large-span bridges, and high-traffic areas.
Ready Mix Concrete
How much ready-mix concrete do I need?
○ The volume of ready-mix concrete required is calculated by taking into consideration the dimensions of your project (volume = length x breadth x height) and the type of structure you are building. It's best also to consult with an engineer and review your drawings/plans.
Can I bring my plans/drawings for you to use to calculate how much ready-mix concrete I need?
○ Yes! We will gladly help you work out how much ready-mix concrete you need.
What information do I need to provide when placing an order for ready-mix concrete?
○ When placing an order, you'll need to provide information such as the volume (m³) of concrete needed, the strength or class of concrete required (MPa), the delivery date and time, the project location, and any specific instructions you may have.
How far in advance should I place my order for ready-mix concrete?
○ It's best to place your order at least a few days in advance to ensure availability and secure a delivery slot.
Is there a minimum order quantity for ready-mix concrete?
○ We do not have a minimum order quantity, but we do have an extra charge for “partial loads” (orders that are 4m³ and below).
Can I request a specific mix or admixtures in my ready-mix concrete?
○ Yes, you can request specific mixes or admixtures based on your project requirements. This could include adding fibres for added strength, water reducers for workability, or even colour additives for decorative purposes. Discuss your needs with us and we will accommodate your request.
What is the typical delivery process for ready-mix concrete?
○ Once your order is confirmed, the ready-mix concrete will be delivered to your project site using a specialized truck with a rotating drum (mixer-truck). The driver will pour the concrete using the chute on the truck or by using a pump if access is limited. It's important to ensure there is sufficient space and access for the delivery truck to reach your project site.
How long do I have before the ready-mix concrete starts to set after it's discharged from the mixer truck?
○ The setting time for ready-mix concrete can vary depending on factors such as temperature, type of mix, and additives used. Generally, you have about 1-2 hours before it begins to set. It's best to have all necessary preparations and equipment ready beforehand to ensure a smooth and timely pour.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my ready-mix concrete order?
○ If you need to cancel or reschedule your order, it's important to inform us 24 hours in advance. Communication is key to avoiding any unnecessary costs or delays.
Can I order concrete for a DIY project or do I need to hire a professional contractor?
○ You can order ready-mix concrete for a DIY project, but it's essential to understand the proper handling, mixing, and pouring techniques. Concrete work can be physically demanding and requires knowledge of safety precautions. If you're not experienced or comfortable with DIY concrete work, it's recommended to hire a professional contractor.
How long after pouring the footing can I start building?
● The timeline between pouring the footing and building the brickwork can vary depending on several factors. Firstly, after the ready mix concrete is poured, it -needs time to cure and harden enough to take some of the load. This process typically takes about 24 to 48 hours, but it can take longer depending on the specific mix and the weather conditions. During this time, it is important to protect the freshly poured concrete from excessive moisture, extreme temperatures, and heavy traffic.
